What Is the API SP Gasoline Engine Oil Additive Package (PA3088P)?
CheMost PA3088P is a gasoline engine oil additive package built for API SP — a single concentrate carrying the detergent, dispersant, antiwear and friction-control functions a passenger-car crankcase oil needs, rather than a shelf of separate additives. It is a brownish-red viscous liquid with a Total Base Number (TBN) of 100 mgKOH/g, 0.68% zinc, 0.84% nitrogen and 0.07% molybdenum.
API SP is the newest gasoline service category, introduced in May 2020 to add low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) protection and timing chain wear protection on top of the deposit and oxidation control earlier categories already covered. PA3088P is formulated to that target.
PA3088P is supplied as a concentrate for Group I, Group II or Group III base oils. The blender adds a viscosity index improver plus any remaining functional additives separately (see Formulating With PA3088P below).
How PA3088P Protects a Modern Gasoline Engine
Acid neutralisation
A TBN of 100 mgKOH/g (ASTM D2896) is the alkaline reserve that neutralises acidic combustion and oxidation by-products. At the published 8.5% treat rate it contributes roughly 8.5 mgKOH/g to the finished oil.
Deposit and sludge control
0.84% nitrogen (ASTM D3228) is consistent with nitrogen-containing ashless dispersant chemistry, which is commonly used to keep soot and oxidation products suspended so they cannot agglomerate into sludge or varnish — one of the areas API tightened further for SP.
Antiwear protection
0.68% zinc and 0.61% phosphorus (both ASTM D4951) are consistent with zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP)-type antiwear chemistry, which is commonly associated with sacrificial tribofilm formation on loaded surfaces — including the timing chain contact points API SP specifically targets.
Molybdenum contribution
0.07% molybdenum (ASTM D4951) is consistent with a supplementary friction-reducing role alongside the zinc/phosphorus antiwear chemistry; at 8.5% treat it puts about 60 ppm Mo into the finished oil.
API SP — Coverage and Current Status
PA3088P is built for API SP, the current top gasoline service category. API introduced SP in May 2020 to add protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), timing chain wear protection, improved high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, and tighter sludge and varnish control on top of what earlier categories already covered. API lists SP as Current (checked against API’s own oil-categories page, 2026-08-26). SP-based formulations with Resource Conserving performance are commonly paired with ILSAC GF-6A.
Service-category performance is a property of the fully formulated finished oil, not of an additive package on its own. PA3088P is used in formulations targeting API SP; final qualification depends on your base oil, viscosity modifier and complete additive slate.
PA3088P Applications in Passenger Car Motor Oil
Modern multigrade gasoline engine oils
Passenger-car oils targeting API SP, including turbocharged direct-injection (GDI) engines where LSPI resistance matters most.
Wide viscosity coverage
Blend with a viscosity index improver to reach the required SAE grade — PA3088P is supplied as a concentrate and does not include one.
Group I–III base oil formulations
Suitable for Group I and Group II or Group III base stocks; exact matching suitability depends on the specific base oil and should be confirmed with our technical team.
Fuel-economy oriented blends
Formulated to keep the engine clean while supporting fuel economy, consistent with the anti-wear and deposit-control mechanisms above.
PA3088P Treat Rate for API SP
PA3088P is published at a single treat rate for its target service level:
| Target API level | Treat rate | TBN contributed* | Zn contributed* | Mo contributed* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SP | 8.5% | 8.5 mgKOH/g | 578 ppm | 60 ppm |
Treat rate is a starting point tied to your base oil and the rest of your additive slate. Matching suitability varies with the base oil used — confirm your formulation with our technical team before production blending.
Formulating With PA3088P — What You Still Need to Add
PA3088P is an additive package, not a fully formulated additive system. Additional functional additives — defoamer additives, pour point depressants, thickening agents or viscosity index improvers — need to be added during use. The exact selection depends on the base oil and target grade:
Viscosity index improver
Needed to reach the target SAE grade. See EPM or liquid OCP — the choice affects shear stability and the final VI.
Defoamer
Where foam control is needed, see PDMS silicone defoamer or our silicone-free option for systems sensitive to silicone carry-over.
Pour point depressant
Whether one is needed depends on the base oil and low-temperature target. See polymethacrylate (PMA) pour point depressant.
Thickener, where specified
Whether one is used depends on the viscosity grade being built.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes API SP different from earlier gasoline categories?
API SP, introduced in May 2020, adds protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and timing chain wear on top of the deposit and oxidation control that earlier categories such as SN and SM already provided, along with tighter high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers. It is API’s current top gasoline service category.
Is API SP still current?
Yes. API lists SP as Current on its own oil-categories page (checked 2026-08-26). It is the newest gasoline engine oil service category.
How much PA3088P is needed for an API SP oil?
8.5% of the finished oil for API SP. At that treat rate the package contributes roughly 8.5 mgKOH/g TBN, 578 ppm zinc and 60 ppm molybdenum. Final treat rate should be confirmed against your specific base oil and additive slate.
What else has to be added besides PA3088P?
Additional functional additives — defoamer additives, pour point depressants, thickening agents or viscosity index improvers — need to be added during use. Which ones you need depends on your base oil and target grade. PA3088P is an additive package, not a fully formulated additive system.
Which base oils is PA3088P suitable for?
Group I and Group II or Group III base oils. Exact matching suitability varies with the specific base oil used — confirm your formulation with our technical team before production blending.
