Ca(dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate)₂ (neutral, barium-free)
Neutral calcium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate — the same adsorbed sulfonate rust film as the barium grade, with no heavy-metal barium.
What Is Calcium Dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate?
CheMost-C1A is an oil-soluble, neutral synthetic calcium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate (calcium DNNS) — a rust inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor that delivers the performance of the DNNS family without heavy-metal barium. It is supplied as a brown viscous liquid containing 2.1% calcium, and is the environmentally friendly choice for formulators replacing barium rust inhibitors.
Dinonylnaphthalene sulfonates are dialkylated, short-chain (C9–C10) alkylnaphthalene sulfonates that protect metal at low treat rates. Rust-prevention effectiveness rises with the cation’s ionic radius (Na < Mg < Ca < Ba), so the barium grade is marginally the strongest per unit — but C1A’s calcium chemistry removes the barium that drives regulatory and environmental concern, while still forming the same adsorbed sulfonate rust film.
C1A is neutral, made inert by a special process so that it does not react with other additives and improves the stability of the finished oil. It also has demulsibility for clean oil-water separation and passes the ASTM D1748 humidity-cabinet rust test. Where barium is acceptable, the barium grades B1SA (neutral) and B1S (overbased) are the alternatives.
How Calcium DNNS Works
Low-treat rust film
The calcium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate adsorbs onto steel, copper and aluminium and packs into a water-impervious film — effective at low concentrations like the rest of the DNNS family.
Barium-free & environmentally friendly
Calcium replaces barium, so the additive gives stable rust prevention with no heavy-metal barium — meeting the barium-free requirement of modern lubricant and rust-preventive formulations.
Inert & additive-compatible
Made neutral after a special process, C1A does not react with EP, antiwear or detergent additives, so it adds rust protection without disturbing the package or destabilising the oil.
Demulsibility
Clean oil-water separation keeps water out of the oil phase — important for gear, hydraulic and circulating oils that must shed water.
Calcium DNNS vs Barium DNNS — Which to Choose
C1A and the barium grades share the same dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate rust film and the same neutral, additive-compatible behaviour; the difference is the cation. C1A (calcium, barium-free) is the choice wherever heavy-metal barium must be avoided for environmental or regulatory reasons — increasingly the default for new formulations. The barium grade B1SA is marginally more potent per unit (Ba > Ca) and remains an option where barium is acceptable; the overbased B1S adds an alkaline reserve. For the same protection, calcium DNNS may be dosed slightly higher than the barium equivalent.
Applications
CheMost-C1A is used as the barium-free rust-inhibitor component in formulations targeting the duties below:
Barium-free rust-preventive oils
The core application — modern rust-preventive and slushing oils that must avoid heavy-metal barium while keeping durable, demulsifying rust protection.
Gear & hydraulic oils
Rust protection in industrial gear and hydraulic oils where the neutral, inert additive coexists with the EP/antiwear package and sheds water cleanly.
Greases & metalworking fluids
Low-treat, barium-free rust protection in greases and metalworking oils for components and stored parts.
Finished-oil performance approvals belong to the fully formulated lubricant, not to an individual additive. CheMost can provide REACH/TSCA and market-registration documentation support on request.
Treat Rate
The data sheet specifies the product but not a per-application dosage, so the figure below is indicative, derived from the chemistry and our formulating experience — confirm the final level.
First-order estimate. As a DNNS, C1A is effective at low treat — typically a fraction of a percent up to a few percent in rust-preventive, gear, hydraulic and metalworking oils, trimmed to the humidity-cabinet and demulsibility target. Because barium is marginally more potent per unit, calcium DNNS may be dosed slightly higher than the barium equivalent for the same protection.
Calcium DNNS is usually the low-dose, barium-free rust component of an additive-rich package; its neutrality means it adds rust protection without shifting the oil’s base number. The exact level depends on the metals protected and the co-additive package.
Treat rates are indicative, not fixed dosages. CheMost can provide formulation and treat-rate support on request.
Formulating With C1A — Complementary Additives
Barium DNNS (where barium is OK)
Where barium is acceptable, the neutral B1SA and overbased B1S offer marginally higher potency and an alkaline-reserve option; C1A is their barium-free counterpart.
Petroleum sulfonates
Sodium and calcium petroleum sulfonates add emulsification or extra film; combining sulfonate types broadens rust-preventive performance.
Benzotriazole (metal deactivator)
C1A protects ferrous metals; BTA passivates copper and yellow metals — together they give barium-free multi-metal protection.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants extend oil life in long-storage rust-preventive and circulating oils, complementing C1A’s stable, demulsifying film.
The CheMost Barium DNNS & Sulfonate Rust-Inhibitor Family
CheMost manufactures the DNNS family in both barium and barium-free calcium forms. C1A (this page) is the environmentally friendly, barium-free grade:
| Product | Cation | Behaviour | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calcium DNNS (C1A) | Calcium (barium-free) | Neutral, environmentally friendly | Modern RP oils avoiding barium |
| Neutral barium DNNS (B1SA) | Barium (neutral) | Inert, demulsibility | EP gear, hydraulic, turbine oils |
| Overbased barium DNNS (B1S) | Barium (overbased) | Alkaline reserve (TBN 45) | Rust-preventive, mill & slushing oils |
| Barium petroleum sulfonate (B50) | Barium (petroleum) | Strongest film, demulsibility | Rust-preventive & sealing oils |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is calcium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate?
It is the neutral calcium salt of dinonylnaphthalenesulfonic acid (CAS 57855-77-3), an oil-soluble rust and corrosion inhibitor. It delivers the DNNS family’s low-treat rust protection without heavy-metal barium, making it the environmentally friendly choice. CheMost-C1A contains 2.1% calcium and is inert, demulsifying and additive-compatible.
How does calcium DNNS compare with barium DNNS?
Both form the same adsorbed dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate rust film. Rust-prevention potency rises with ionic radius (Ba > Ca), so the barium grade is marginally stronger per unit, but calcium DNNS removes the heavy-metal barium. For the same protection, C1A may be dosed slightly higher than the barium grade B1SA.
Is C1A really barium-free and environmentally friendly?
Yes — C1A uses calcium in place of barium, so it provides stable rust prevention with no heavy-metal barium. This is why formulators choose it when replacing barium rust inhibitors to meet environmental and regulatory requirements.
Does C1A work in EP gear oils?
Yes — it is made neutral by a special process, so it is inert and does not react with EP, antiwear or detergent additives. Combined with its demulsibility and ASTM D1748 humidity-cabinet pass, that makes it suited to EP gear and hydraulic oils that must stay stable and shed water.
How is it supplied, and how fast can I get a sample?
It is supplied in 200 kg metal drums and 1000 kg IBC tanks with a 36-month shelf life, and shipped worldwide. As a manufacturer and sourcing partner (Est. 2013), CheMost answers sample and quotation requests within 12 hours.
