Molecular Structure
Molecular structure · ashless dithiocarbamate
4,4′-Methylenebis(N,N-dibutyldithiocarbamate), C₁₉H₃₈N₂S₄ · CAS 10254-57-6
An ashless sulfur–nitrogen dithiocarbamate — two dibutyldithiocarbamate units bridged by a methylene; metal-free, so it leaves no ash.
What Is Methylenebis(dibutyldithiocarbamate) (T7723)?
CheMost-T7723 is 4,4′-methylenebis(dibutyldithiocarbamate) — an oil-soluble, ashless dithiocarbamate that is genuinely multifunctional: an extreme-pressure (EP) and antiwear additive that is also a high-temperature antioxidant. It carries a high sulfur content (30%) and 6.2% nitrogen in a sulfur–nitrogen backbone, with good oil solubility in mineral Groups I–III.
Its defining feature is that it is metal-free — it contributes no sulfated ash. Dithiocarbamates are a major class of sulfur–nitrogen additives used as antioxidants, antiwear and anticorrosion agents; the ashless members, such as this methylene-bridged bis(dialkyldithiocarbamate), bring that chemistry without adding metal or ash, which is exactly what modern low-SAPS and low-phosphorus formulations need.
Because one molecule delivers EP, antiwear and antioxidancy at once, T7723 is valued where phosphorus and ash must be kept low — low-phosphorus engine oils, industrial gear oils, turbine oils and greases. It is the ashless counterpart of the molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC): the same dithiocarbamate chemistry, but built around a methylene bridge instead of a molybdenum centre.
How T7723 Works
Sulfur EP / antiwear film
Under load the sulfur-rich dithiocarbamate reacts with the metal surface to build a protective sulfide film that carries extreme pressure and prevents scuffing and wear — the EP/antiwear function.
Secondary antioxidant
The same molecule acts as a secondary antioxidant: it decomposes the peroxides and hydroperoxides formed during oxidation into non-radical species, slowing oil ageing at high temperature.
Ashless & phosphorus-free
Containing no metal and no phosphorus, it adds no sulfated ash and does not load the SAPS or phosphorus budget — ideal for low-phosphorus (<0.1% P) and low-SAPS oils.
Synergy with primary antioxidants
It is synergistic with aminic and phenolic primary antioxidants, organomolybdenum compounds and triazole metal deactivators, lifting high-temperature deposit and oxidation control beyond what each gives alone.
Ashless EP/AW Additives Compared — Where T7723 Fits
CheMost’s extreme-pressure range spans sulfur carriers, an ashless phosphorus antiwear ester and this ashless dithiocarbamate. The table places T7723 against the others so you can pick by active elements, role and ash. All figures are from each grade’s data sheet.
| Grade | Type | Active elements | Primary role | Ash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T7723 (this page) | Ashless dithiocarbamate | S 30% · N 6.2% | EP + antiwear + antioxidant | Ashless |
| Sulfurized Isobutylene | Sulfur carrier | S (active) | Extreme pressure | Ashless |
| Sulfurized Olefin | Sulfur carrier | S (active) | Extreme pressure | Ashless |
| Triphenyl Phosphorothioate (TPPT) | Phosphorus ester | P + S | Antiwear (mild EP) | Ashless |
T7723 is the one that is multifunctional — it brings EP, antiwear and antioxidancy together — and it adds nitrogen, not phosphorus. Where you need pure load-carrying EP, pair it with a sulfur carrier; where you need ashless phosphorus antiwear, see TPPT.
Applications
CheMost-T7723 is used as the ashless, multifunctional EP/antiwear and antioxidant component in formulations targeting the duties below:
Low-phosphorus engine oils
Engine oils that must keep phosphorus low (<0.1% P) yet need high-temperature antioxidancy and antiwear — T7723 supplies both without adding phosphorus or ash.
Industrial gear & hydraulic oils
Ashless EP/antiwear with oxidation protection for industrial gear and hydraulic oils where metal-containing additives are unwanted.
Turbine oils
High-temperature antioxidant and antiwear performance for turbine oils; methylene-bridged dithiocarbamates have been used to replace tricresyl phosphate in this duty.
Greases
Ashless EP, antiwear and antioxidancy in greases, where the high sulfur content reinforces load-carrying.
Finished-oil performance approvals (e.g. API, ACEA or OEM specifications) belong to the fully formulated oil, not to an individual additive component.
Treat Rate
The data sheet specifies the product but not a per-application dosage, so the figures below are indicative, derived from the chemistry and our formulating experience — confirm the final level.
First-order estimate. As an ashless multifunctional dithiocarbamate (EP/antiwear + secondary antioxidant), T7723 is typically used at roughly 0.25–2%, dosed to the oxidation and wear targets (RPVOT/RBOT, four-ball/FZG). A key advantage is that it raises antioxidancy and antiwear without adding phosphorus or ash, so it is especially useful in low-phosphorus packages.
It is usually combined with a primary antioxidant (aminic or phenolic) — the secondary/primary pair covers both peroxide decomposition and radical trapping — and, where needed, a sulfur-carrier EP additive for extra load-carrying. The exact level depends on the oxidation/wear target, the base oil and the rest of the package.
Treat rates are indicative, not fixed dosages. CheMost can provide formulation and treat-rate support on request.
Formulating With T7723 — Complementary Additives
Aminic antioxidant (ADPA)
As a secondary antioxidant, T7723 is synergistic with alkylated diphenylamine — the secondary (peroxide-decomposing) and primary (radical-trapping) pair stabilises mineral and synthetic oils at high temperature.
Organomolybdenum (MoDTC)
Methylene bis(dialkyldithiocarbamate) is synergistic with organomolybdenum compounds in high-temperature deposit control — the ashless and molybdenum dithiocarbamates complement one another.
Metal deactivator (triazole)
Combined with a triazole metal deactivator such as benzotriazole, the dithiocarbamate gives synergistic oxidation stability and yellow-metal protection.
Sulfur-carrier EP
For heavier load-carrying, a sulfur carrier (sulfurized isobutylene or sulfurized olefin) adds pure EP alongside T7723’s multifunctional contribution.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is methylenebis(dibutyldithiocarbamate) (T7723)?
It is an oil-soluble, ashless dithiocarbamate (CAS 10254-57-6; S 30%, N 6.2%) that is multifunctional — an extreme-pressure and antiwear additive that is also a high-temperature antioxidant. Being metal-free, it adds no sulfated ash, which suits low-SAPS and low-phosphorus oils, greases and gear/turbine oils.
How is it different from molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC)?
Both share dithiocarbamate chemistry, but T7723 is ashless — two dibutyldithiocarbamate groups bridged by a methylene, with no metal. MoDTC is built around a molybdenum centre and is primarily a friction modifier (it forms MoS₂). T7723 is the metal-free EP/antiwear + antioxidant option.
Is it really both an EP additive and an antioxidant?
Yes. The sulfur-rich dithiocarbamate builds a protective sulfide film under load (EP/antiwear) and also acts as a secondary antioxidant, decomposing peroxides to slow oxidation. That dual role is why it is used in low-phosphorus, high-temperature formulations.
What treat rate should I use?
As an ashless multifunctional dithiocarbamate it is typically used at about 0.25–2%, dosed to the oxidation and wear targets and usually paired with a primary (aminic/phenolic) antioxidant. The exact level depends on the base oil and the rest of the package; our technical team can assist.
How is it supplied, and how fast can I get a sample?
It is supplied as a golden-yellow liquid in 200 kg metal drums and 1000 kg IBC tanks with a 36-month shelf life, and shipped worldwide. As a manufacturer and sourcing partner (Est. 2013), CheMost answers sample and quotation requests within 12 hours.
