The basics

What Are Lubricant Additive Packages?

A lubricant additive package is a pre-formulated blend of multiple components — antioxidants, antiwear agents, detergents, dispersants, friction modifiers, corrosion inhibitors, pour-point depressants and defoamers — dissolved in a carrier oil at precise concentrations. Instead of sourcing each additive separately, a blender adds the package to base oil at the recommended treat rate (typically 5–15 wt%) and produces a finished lubricant that meets a target spec such as API SP, CK-4 or GL-5.

The package model

The supplier does the formulation chemistry; the blender does one addition

The package supplier selects components for compatibility, balances treat rates against the spec and runs the bench and engine tests that prove it. This is the dominant model for independent blenders outside the majors — regional, private-label and industrial manufacturers rarely formulate from scratch; they buy packages. CheMost is unusual in supplying both individual components and pre-formulated packages from the same Jinzhou facility — the components inside a package are the same ones sold individually, with full traceability from reactor to finished package.

Decide

Additive Packages vs Individual Components

Every lubricant business faces the same choice: formulate from components or buy a package. It depends on scale, technical capability and market position.

Buy a Package When…

  • Annual volume is under ~5,000 t of finished lubricant
  • No dedicated formulation chemist on staff
  • A specific API / ACEA / OEM target is needed quickly
  • Simpler procurement: one supplier instead of 10–15 component suppliers
  • Entering a new category (e.g. a gear-oil blender adding engine oils)
  • One addition step and one QC check to produce a spec-compliant oil

Formulate from Components When…

  • Annual volume exceeds ~10,000 t — the package premium exceeds in-house formulation investment
  • Proprietary technology needs protection
  • Performance fine-tuning beyond standard packages is required
  • Blending for multiple regional specs — the component mix can be optimised across the line
  • Large blenders often use packages for mid-tier products, components only for flagship high-volume SKUs

Decision guide

How to Select an Additive Package

  1. Define the target specification first. The API / ACEA / OEM spec you must claim dictates the package — API SP (gasoline), CK-4 (diesel), GL-5 (gear), DIN 51524 (hydraulic). A lower tier won’t satisfy modern OEM warranties; a cross-category package won’t meet spec. Define the spec, then find the matching package.
  2. Match the package to your base-oil group. Packages are formulated for specific base-oil chemistries — a Group I package may not fully dissolve or perform in Group II/III; PAO and ester stocks differ again. Tell us your base oil; the dispersant and antioxidant components may need adjustment.
  3. Calculate total cost-in-use, not package price. A 6% package is not automatically cheaper than a 10% one — compare total cost per litre of finished oil including base-oil cost: (base oil × $/L) + (package at X% × $/kg). That is the only number that matters for blender margin.
  4. Verify regional approvals and OEM claims. API and ACEA are global, but markets add requirements (JASO, BIS and individual OEM approvals — Caterpillar, Cummins, Volvo, MAN). A package that passes API CK-4 may not carry a specific OEM approval without additional engine testing. Verify the approval letters for your market before committing. (Note: API/OEM licences are held by the finished-oil marketer, not the additive supplier.)
  5. Consolidate suppliers where possible. A blender producing gasoline + diesel + gear + hydraulic needs at least four packages. Consolidating with one supplier — CheMost supplies all six categories from the same factory — reduces procurement overhead and gives multi-package pricing leverage.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lubricant additive package and how does it differ from a component?

A component is a single-function concentrate — pure ZDDP antiwear, pure calcium sulfonate detergent, pure PIBSI dispersant. A package is a pre-formulated blend of multiple components designed to meet a specific spec (API SP, CK-4, GL-5). The blender adds the package at a single treat rate (e.g. 8–12 wt%) to base oil and produces a spec-compliant finished oil without formulating from scratch. CheMost supplies both: components for formulators who want control over treat rates, packages for blenders who want simplicity.

What API grades are covered by CheMost’s engine oil packages?

The engine-oil portfolio covers gasoline (PCMO) — API SJ, SL, SN/SM and SP — and diesel (HDDO) — API CC/CD, CF-4, CH-4 and CI-4/CI-4+. The SP package includes LSPI protection for turbocharged GDI engines. Contact CheMost to confirm the latest test-data status for specific grades; the API licence itself is held by the finished-oil marketer, not the additive package.

Can CheMost develop a custom additive package for a specific OEM or private-label requirement?

Yes. CheMost provides custom package development for OEM specifications, private-label brands and specific regional API / ACEA / JASO targets. Provide your target specification, base-oil type, viscosity grade and performance requirements — our Jinzhou technical team proposes a formulation, runs bench tests and supplies samples for your pilot blend. Timelines depend on specification complexity and testing requirements.

What documentation does CheMost provide with each package?

Every package shipment carries a TDS (treat rates, typical properties, performance data); a GHS SDS for safety and regulatory compliance; and a per-batch COA confirming the batch meets specification. For packages with API / ACEA test data, reports are available on request. Customs documentation, including HS-code classification and origin certificates, is available for export shipments.

About this catalog & our data. The specifications and test methods on this page are public references (API, ACEA, DIN, SAE) — not CheMost measurements. Grade specifications come from each package’s TDS; where a value is not confirmed for a grade, we mark it “on request” rather than estimate. CheMost is a manufacturer and sourcing partner established in 2013; OEM and API/ACEA licences are held by the finished-oil marketer, not the additive package. The same components inside our packages are sold individually, with full traceability from reactor to finished package. Last reviewed June 2026 · CheMost technical team.
