Molecular structure · barium sulfonate

Ba(dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate)₂ (neutral)

Neutral barium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate — the sulfonate rust film without an alkaline reserve, so it is inert and additive-compatible.

What Is Neutral Barium Dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate?

CheMost-B1SA is an oil-soluble, neutral synthetic barium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate (barium DNNS) — a high-performance rust inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor. It is supplied as a brown transparent liquid containing 6.7% barium with a near-zero base number (TBN 0.8), made neutral by a special process so that it stays inert and does not react with other additives — improving the stability of the finished oil.

Dinonylnaphthalene sulfonates are dialkylated, short-chain (C9–C10) alkylnaphthalene sulfonates valued because barium DNNS protects against rust at low treat rates compared with the calcium and sodium derivatives. Among the sulfonate cations, rust-prevention effectiveness rises with ionic radius (Na < Mg < Ca < Ba), so the barium salt is the strongest film-former.

Where the overbased grade CheMost-B1S carries an alkaline reserve, B1SA is the neutral counterpart: the same barium DNNS rust film, but without the excess base — so it can be used in extreme-pressure gear oils and other additive-rich systems where excess alkalinity would interfere. It also has measured demulsibility (ASTM D1401, 10 min), giving clean oil-water separation in turbine and hydraulic oils.

How Neutral Barium DNNS Works

Low-treat rust film

The barium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate adsorbs onto steel, copper and aluminium and packs into a water-impervious film — effective at low concentrations, so a small dose protects.

Inert & additive-compatible

Made neutral after a special process, B1SA does not react with EP, antiwear or detergent additives — so it protects against rust without disturbing the rest of the package or destabilising the oil.

Demulsibility

Strong oil-water separation (ASTM D1401, 10 min) keeps water out of the oil phase — essential for turbine, hydraulic and circulating oils that must shed water cleanly.

EP-system safe

Because it carries no excess base, B1SA is the barium DNNS of choice in extreme-pressure gear oils, where the overbased B1S could interfere with the EP additives.

Choosing Between B1SA (Neutral) and B1S (Overbased)

Both are the same barium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate rust film (full numbers in the Technical Specifications above); they differ in base number. B1SA is neutral (TBN 0.8, Ba 6.7%) — choose it where the additive must stay inert and compatible with the rest of the package, especially in extreme-pressure gear oils, hydraulic and turbine oils where demulsibility and stability matter. B1S is overbased (TBN 45, Ba 11.0%) — choose it where an alkaline reserve to neutralise acids is wanted, in rust-preventive, mill and slushing oils. The two are frequently combined: B1SA for the film, B1S for the reserve.

Applications

CheMost-B1SA is used as the rust-inhibitor component in formulations targeting the duties below, wherever inertness, demulsibility and additive compatibility matter:

EP gear & industrial oils

Rust protection in extreme-pressure gear oils and industrial oils where the additive must coexist with the EP/antiwear package without interference.

Hydraulic & turbine oils

Rust protection with clean water separation (demulsibility) in hydraulic and turbine oils that must shed water and stay stable through service.

Greases & rust-preventive fluids

Low-treat rust protection in greases and rust-preventive fluids; often paired with the overbased B1S for added alkaline reserve.

Finished-oil performance approvals belong to the fully formulated lubricant, not to an individual additive. Barium additives face tightening regional controls; CheMost can provide regulatory documentation support on request.

Treat Rate

The data sheet specifies the product but not a per-application dosage, so the figure below is indicative, derived from the chemistry and our formulating experience — confirm the final level.

First-order estimate. As a DNNS, B1SA is effective at low treat — typically a fraction of a percent up to a few percent in gear, hydraulic, turbine and rust-preventive oils, trimmed to the humidity-cabinet and demulsibility target. Its neutrality means it adds rust protection without shifting the oil’s base number.

Neutral barium DNNS is usually the low-dose rust component of an additive-rich package; in EP gear oils it adds rust protection without disturbing the EP system, and in rust-preventive oils it is paired with the overbased B1S. The exact level depends on the metals protected and the co-additive package.

Treat rates are indicative, not fixed dosages. CheMost can provide formulation and treat-rate support on request.

Formulating With B1SA — Complementary Additives

Overbased barium DNNS (B1S)

The overbased partner: B1S adds the alkaline reserve to neutralise acids while B1SA carries the inert, EP-safe rust film — the classic neutral-plus-overbased rust-preventive pair.

EP / antiwear additives

Because B1SA is neutral and inert, it coexists with sulfur-phosphorus EP and antiwear packages in gear and hydraulic oils without interfering with them — its headline advantage over an overbased grade.

Benzotriazole (metal deactivator)

The barium sulfonate protects ferrous metals; BTA passivates copper and yellow metals — together they give multi-metal protection in gear and hydraulic oils.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants extend oil life in turbine and hydraulic service; B1SA’s stability and clean demulsibility complement a long-life R&O package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is neutral barium dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate?

It is the neutral barium salt of dinonylnaphthalenesulfonic acid (CAS 25619-56-1), an oil-soluble rust and corrosion inhibitor with a near-zero base number (TBN 0.8). Made neutral by a special process, it stays inert and does not react with other additives, so it adds rust protection while keeping the finished oil stable. CheMost-B1SA contains 6.7% barium.

What is the difference between B1SA and B1S?

Both are barium DNNS rust inhibitors. B1SA is neutral (TBN 0.8, Ba 6.7%), inert and additive-compatible — best for extreme-pressure gear, hydraulic and turbine oils, with demulsibility. B1S is overbased (TBN 45, Ba 11.0%) and adds an alkaline reserve — best for rust-preventive, mill and slushing oils.

Why use a neutral barium DNNS in EP gear oils?

An overbased rust inhibitor carries excess base that can interfere with the extreme-pressure additive system. B1SA is neutral and inert, so it provides rust protection without disturbing the EP package or the oil’s base number — which is why it is the recommended barium DNNS for EP gear oils.

Does B1SA separate cleanly from water?

Yes — it has measured demulsibility (ASTM D1401, 10 min), so it sheds water cleanly. Combined with its passing ASTM D1748 humidity-cabinet rust result, this makes it suited to turbine and hydraulic oils that must keep water out of the oil phase.

How is it supplied, and how fast can I get a sample?

It is supplied in 200 kg metal drums and 1000 kg IBC tanks with a 36-month shelf life, and shipped worldwide. As a manufacturer and sourcing partner (Est. 2013), CheMost answers sample and quotation requests within 12 hours.
