PIBSA & Sorbitan Ester Emulsifiers for Emulsion Explosives — Chlorine-Free Thermal Process, Factory Direct from Jinzhou, China
What Are Mining Chemicals?
CheMost’s mining chemicals are emulsifier systems for water-in-oil emulsion explosives used in open-pit and underground mining, quarrying, and construction blasting. The core products are PIBSA-based polymeric emulsifiers and sorbitan ester co-emulsifiers — the two chemical families that stabilize the ammonium nitrate/water phase inside a continuous fuel-oil matrix.
Emulsion explosives offer superior energy density, water resistance, and sensitivity control compared to ANFO. The emulsifier chemistry is the critical variable: it determines droplet size, shelf life, and detonation reliability. CheMost supplies both the primary emulsifier (PIBSA) and the reactive intermediate (PIBSA anhydride) for manufacturers who synthesize their own emulsifier grades in-house. We supply emulsifier components only — final explosive formulation, manufacturing and all blasting-related regulatory compliance are the responsibility of the licensed explosive manufacturer. For the emulsion-vs-ANFO chemistry and the equipment-lubrication side of mining, see the Mining & Explosives Chemicals industry hub.
PIBSA Emulsifiers
Polyisobutylene succinic anhydride derivatives. Polymeric structure provides high-temperature stability and long shelf life. HLB 4–6, active >65%. Primary choice for bulk and packaged emulsion explosives.
Sorbitan Ester (S80)
Monomeric sorbitol-based co-emulsifier. Lower viscosity, easier handling. Used alone in low-shear systems or blended with PIBSA to adjust emulsion sensitivity and rheology for heavy ANFO.
PIBSA Intermediate
Reactive polyisobutylene succinic anhydride made by CheMost’s chlorine-free thermal process. For explosive manufacturers who react PIBSA with amines on-site to produce custom emulsifier grades.
Product Range at a Glance
Three grades cover primary emulsification, co-emulsification, and on-site emulsifier synthesis. Confirmed values for any grade are on its TDS.
| Grade | Chemistry | Key properties | Role | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PIBSA emulsifier | PIB succinic anhydride derivative | HLB 4–6 · active >65% · polymeric | primary emulsifier — shelf life & shear resistance | bulk & packaged emulsion |
| Sorbitan ester (S80) | sorbitan monooleate | HLB ~4.3 · monomeric · low viscosity | co-emulsifier — rheology & sensitivity | heavy ANFO; blend with PIBSA |
| PIBSA intermediate | reactive PIB succinic anhydride | chlorine-free thermal · high reactive isomer | on-site amination to custom grades | manufacturers synthesising own |
A typical primary/co-emulsifier blend is around 70% PIBSA : 30% S80 by weight, adjusted to phase ratio and processing conditions; the dose into the finished emulsion is set per the manufacturer’s formulation and TDS.
Explosive Types & Applications
CheMost emulsifiers are formulated into four major emulsion explosive systems. Each places different demands on emulsifier HLB, viscosity, and thermal stability.
Bulk Emulsion Explosives
Pumped or augered into blast holes at the mine site. Requires robust emulsifier with high active content to survive mechanical shear during loading. PIBSA-based systems preferred.
Packaged Emulsion
Pre-manufactured cartridges for controlled blasting. Needs stable emulsion over extended storage at varying temperatures. PIBSA emulsifier + S80 co-emulsifier combination delivers both stability and sensitivity.
Heavy ANFO (HANFO)
Emulsion blended with ANFO prill for cost-effective blasting in dry to moderately wet conditions. S80 sorbitan ester is effective here as a sole emulsifier due to lower shear requirements.
Underground Blasting
Confined spaces demand precisely sensitized explosives with reliable detonation. Emulsifier chemistry controls sensitivity initiation. PIBSA systems provide the droplet-size consistency required for reliable performance.
PIBSA Emulsifier vs S80 Sorbitan Ester — Which to Use?
Both emulsifier types stabilize W/O emulsions, but serve different roles in a formulation:
Choose PIBSA Emulsifier when:
- You need long shelf life (6–12 months) at elevated storage temperatures
- Formulating bulk emulsion explosives subject to high shear during pumping
- Primary emulsifier for high-energy packaged cartridges
- Regulatory requirements specify polymeric emulsifier systems
Choose S80 Sorbitan Ester when:
- Formulating heavy ANFO or low-energy blends where cost is critical
- Using as co-emulsifier (20–40%) to reduce emulsion viscosity alongside PIBSA
- Low-shear mixing processes where monomeric emulsifiers perform adequately
- Adjusting sensitivity and rheology of existing PIBSA-based systems

Frequently Asked Questions
How is CheMost’s PIBSA made — and why does the process matter?
CheMost produces PIBSA via a chlorine-free thermal process using high-activity polyisobutylene (HR-PIB) reacted with maleic anhydride. This avoids the chlorinated impurities (mainly HCl) generated by the alternative halogenation route, which can corrode equipment, introduce undesirable reaction byproducts, and complicate regulatory approval in some jurisdictions. The thermal process also yields a higher proportion of reactive PIBSA isomers (primarily the tetrahydro form), which is beneficial for downstream amination reactions.
What HLB value do emulsion explosives require?
Emulsion explosives are water-in-oil (W/O) systems and require emulsifiers with an HLB value in the 4–6 range. CheMost’s PIBSA-based emulsifier has an HLB of approximately 4–6 and active content >65%. If HLB is too high (toward oil-in-water range), the emulsion will invert or separate. S80 sorbitan monooleate has an HLB of about 4.3, making it naturally suited as a W/O co-emulsifier.
Can PIBSA emulsifier and S80 be used together?
Yes — and this is a common formulation approach. PIBSA provides the long-term stability and shear resistance needed for bulk applications, while S80 lowers system viscosity, reduces cost, and can fine-tune emulsion sensitivity. A typical starting ratio is 70% PIBSA emulsifier : 30% S80 by weight, adjusted based on phase ratio and processing conditions. CheMost can supply both components, allowing you to standardize your supply chain.
What documentation does CheMost provide for explosive emulsifiers?
CheMost provides full technical documentation including: TDS (Technical Data Sheet) with active content, HLB, viscosity, and appearance; MSDS/SDS compliant with GHS; COA (Certificate of Analysis) per lot; and UN transport classification data where applicable.
